The Memphis Funeral Home facility occupies a prominent position on Poplar Avenue in the Financial District. The building features a bright, open foyer designed to welcome guests with warmth. Inside, families find multiple gathering spaces scaled to different needs: the intimate Hearth Room for smaller groups, the adaptable Sheraton Suite that reconfigures from one to three rooms, and the grand Life Remembrance Center for large receptions. The traditional chapel accommodates approximately 200 guests in a space with historic character. A coffee lounge provides a casual setting for conversation, and the facility is pet-friendly.
Memphis Funeral Home emphasizes personalized service, with staff taking time to listen and plan celebrations ranging from hayrides to soccer game viewings to Memphis Symphony appearances.
Memphis Funeral Home traces its origins to 1931, when it opened as National Funeral Home with a focus on pre-planned, affordable funeral services. By the early 1960s, it had become the busiest funeral home in the United States, serving more than 3,000 families annually from a single location. The name changed to Memphis Funeral Home in 1962. Since 1970, the business has been managed by Paul B. McCarver and E.C. Daves, with Lon Thurmer (now deceased) also guiding its growth.
The funeral home sits at 5599 Poplar Avenue in Memphis's Financial District, directly across from Memorial Park Cemetery—the largest cemetery in Tennessee. The facility's design deliberately echoes the ambiance of the city's famed Peabody Hotel, with warm, open spaces intended to make a difficult time more bearable. A fireplace burns during winter months in the foyer.
As a member of the Dignity Memorial network, Memphis Funeral Home combines locally operated attention with the resources of North America's largest funeral, burial, cremation and cemetery provider network.
