M.J. Edwards Funeral Home operates from a two-story red brick building at the corner of Airways Boulevard and Spottswood Avenue in Memphis's Whitehaven neighborhood. Founded in March 1980 by M.J. Edwards Sr. alongside Rev. David Craft and Evelyn Cooper, the funeral home began with a single hearse, one limousine, and one sedan—handling 12 services in its first month. Today, the operation has expanded to multiple locations including Orange Mound, Southaven, and Raleigh, with more than a dozen hearses and an even larger fleet of limousines and sedans.
The funeral home joined the Dignity Memorial network following the death of M.J. Edwards Sr. in 2019, after more than 70 years in funeral service. His son, Monroe J. Edwards Jr., continues the legacy. The Whitehaven location specifically caters to diverse faith traditions and backgrounds, with staff who ask detailed questions about loved ones—their hobbies, music preferences, and passions—to craft personalized services ranging from traditional religious funerals to contemporary outdoor celebrations of life.
