Resthaven Funeral Home & Memorial Park has anchored Lubbock's memorial landscape since 1948, when P.W. Curry founded what was then Tech Memorial Park. Located just inside the loop and roughly two miles from Texas Tech University, the property spans 80 acres of manicured grounds dotted with pecan trees. The funeral home itself opened in 1965 after Edward Smith and four partners purchased the cemetery, with Smith eventually becoming sole owner by 1979.
The site's most distinctive feature is the Empty Tomb, a 5-acre elevated section conceived by Edward Smith in 1990. A bronze angel guards a concrete tomb with an 800-pound rolling door that closes each Good Friday and reopens Easter morning for interdenominational sunrise services—a tradition running from 1994 to present. The cemetery includes one indoor and three outdoor mausoleums, cremation gardens, and religious monuments including a bronze Christ statue and Stations of the Cross.
