Built in 2001 and completed in October 2002, the Lafayette facility sits on 3.5 acres of property with ample parking. The 8,000-square-foot building contains an embalming room, casket room, office space, and coffee/reception areas. Two viewing rooms each accommodate approximately 200 people and can be converted into one large room seating about 400. Each room features a speaker system, podium for funeral services, flower racks, and a 40-inch television for video presentations.
Kinchen Funeral Home provides family-oriented services including cremation, traditional and nontraditional funeral services, and pre-need arrangements. The experienced staff assists families with complete funeral planning.
Kinchen Funeral Home has served Lafayette and the Acadiana community for more than 75 years since its founding in November 1938 by Ernest Washington Kinchen Sr., Edna J. Kinchen, and Mr. Lutrell Cox. The business began at 210 Delord Street, operating from the family home with wakes held in one section and embalming conducted in a converted garage. By December 1941, the Kinchens acquired full ownership and gradually expanded the facility to approximately 3,000 square feet by the 1970s, with a complete remodel in 1987. That same year, the business incorporated and Ernest and Edna's grandson, Eric M. Singleton, joined the operation.
In 1996, the family purchased eleven acres near the original site and began construction on a new facility in spring 2001. Completed in October 2002, the current 8,000-square-foot building at 1011 North St. Antoine Street offers significantly expanded capacity and modern amenities. Edna Kinchen remained active in the business until her death in November 2001; she held a funeral director's license. Today, Eric Singleton manages day-to-day operations, continuing the family legacy into its third generation.
