Services
The cemetery occupies a landscaped property at 738 N Chestnut with the administrative office located separately at 730 N Chestnut. The grounds feature interpretive kiosks for historical education, the restored chapel (completed August 2022), and marked walking paths for history and tree tours. Cemetery grounds open daily from sunrise to sunset.
Staff assist families through the full arrangement process, from selecting cemetery space and coordinating with funeral homes to ordering monuments and arranging military honors when applicable.
Olathe Memorial Cemetery has anchored the community since 1865, when businessman Watts Beckwith set aside ten acres of his land for burial grounds—without waiting for city approval. His sister Elvira became the first interment that same year. The cemetery's current location at 738 N Chestnut became the permanent resting place after railroad construction forced relocation from the original "Church Square" site downtown, explaining why some markers predate 1865.
The grounds hold layered significance: two Kansas governors (John Pierce St. John and George H. Hodges), Civil War soldiers from both Union and Confederate armies, and generations of pioneers who traveled west by covered wagon. The cemetery operates under a stated mission to provide compassionate burial services with dedication to maintaining accurate records in a beautifully kept setting. Families work with staff at the 730 N Chestnut office for arrangements from pre-planning through burial.
