Services
Hart's Mortuary operates three distinct facilities designed to serve different geographic and service needs. The Cherry Street location at 765 Cherry Street in downtown Macon serves as the historic flagship and houses the on-site crematory that has operated since 1931. The Cupola at 6324 Peake Road provides additional Macon-area capacity. The Jones County Chapel at 307 Pecan Lane in Gray—opened as the newest location—features what Hart's describes as the only facility of its kind in the country, combining state-of-the-art cremation technology with design elements intended to allow families to participate in cremation ceremonies similarly to traditional burial services. The Gray facility includes a spacious parking lot, chapel with multiple screens and projectors for video tributes, and a dedicated reception area for post-service gatherings. All locations offer arrangement conference spaces and are staffed by licensed funeral directors.
Hart's staff emphasizes personalized service guided by what they term "the highest ethical industry standards," with arrangements adaptable to individual and family preferences.
Hart's Mortuary and Cremation Center traces its origins to 1899 when entrepreneur Jessie B. Hart purchased a local undertaking firm in Macon, Georgia. Within two years, he had bought out his partner and acquired a second firm, establishing a foundation that would grow into one of the state's largest funeral operations. The business moved to its current Cherry Street location in 1931, a facility constructed by RH Smalling and Sons that remains the company's central hub.
The Heard family has guided Hart's since 1982, when J. Milton Heard III acquired the business from the Hart family. His son, Milton Heard IV, now serves as owner, president, and licensed funeral director, continuing a tradition that spans four generations of leadership. Today Hart's operates three locations: the historic Cherry Street chapel in downtown Macon, the Cupola facility on Peake Road, and the Jones County Chapel in Gray—opened as the most recent expansion to serve growing demand in middle Georgia.
What distinguishes Hart's in the regional market is its operational structure. Unlike competitors who rely on third-party crematories, Hart's has performed cremations on-site since 1931, ensuring families that loved ones remain in their care throughout the entire process.
