Round Rock Cemetery operates as a historic burial ground with contemporary administrative support. Families can schedule guided tours before purchasing, and researchers can access digital tools for remote exploration.
Round Rock Cemetery traces its origins to the mid-1800s, established when Round Rock itself was a frontier settlement in Williamson County. The burial ground occupies a central place in local history, interring both ordinary citizens and figures whose names now mark city streets and landmarks.
The cemetery grounds double as an open-air history museum. Visitors encounter the grave of Samuel Bass, the Indiana-born outlaw whose attempted bank robbery on July 19, 1878 ended in a fatal shootout that made Round Rock famous. Nearby rests A.W. "Caige" Grimes, the local lawman killed in that same confrontation while preventing the Williamson County Bank robbery. The cemetery also holds C.W. Raines, a Georgia transplant who served as Texas state librarian, judge, newspaper publisher, teacher, and historian.
Today the cemetery maintains active operations with available inventory of single and double plots. The Round Rock Cemetery Association Fund, administered through the Central Texas Community Foundation, channels tax-deductible donations toward ongoing preservation and beautification. Monthly volunteer workdays enlist community members in grounds maintenance, from shrub trimming to debris removal.
