Carl Barnes Funeral Home occupies a single-story red brick building at the corner of West 22nd Street and North Durham Drive in Houston's Heights neighborhood. Founded in June 1932 by Carl and Maxey Barnes during the Great Depression, the business emerged after the family's grocery store failed. By 1933, they were serving more than 60 families annually. The Barnes family—later joined by sons Titus and Timothy—built what became known as the largest Black-owned funeral home in Texas. Timothy Barnes, who died in 2013, was recognized as the oldest and longest-licensed funeral director in Texas. Today, Michael Jones serves as location manager, continuing the Barnes family mission.
