Holmesâwhose family had been in Charleston's funeral business since 1899âthe establishment became more than a service provider; it served as a community hub offering financial assistance, legal advice, and meeting space for neighborhood activities. The Holmes family started Union Heights' first Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts troops and provided part-time employment to residents.
The business closed in 2014, then reopened in April 2016 under Leroy Rivers, manager of The Ministry of Rivers Funeral Home in Goose Creek, SC. Rivers, who founded his Goose Creek funeral home in 1990, approaches Suburban as a ministry focused on serving the community.
