Beinhauer Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services traces its origins to 1860, when Louis Beinhauer opened his first mortuary on Third Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh. The family relocated to West Liberty Avenue in Dormont in 1910, consolidating operations there by 1921—the same year they built Pittsburgh's first crematory, now the second-oldest continuously operating crematory facility in the United States.
The business weathered a devastating seven-alarm fire in 1952 that destroyed the original Dormont building, rebuilding on the same site where it continues to operate today. Under Richard C. "Rick" Beinhauer's leadership beginning in 1979, the company expanded from its Dormont roots to five current locations serving the South Hills: McMurray (Peters Township), Dormont, Bridgeville, Bethel Park, and Canonsburg, plus Woodruff Memorial Park cemetery. Rick's son Scott became the sixth generation to join the family business in 1996.
The organization now serves families across Washington County, Allegheny County, and surrounding areas from facilities specifically designed for funeral service, including the first purpose-built funeral home in Peters Township (1982) and the first specifically designed funeral building in Allegheny County (Dormont, 1910/1952 rebuild).
