Belcrest Memorial Park occupies 70 acres of gently rolling hills atop a bell-shaped crest in south Salem, with sweeping views of the Willamette Valley below. Founded in 1928 by W.A. Laidlaw, it was established as one of the first and largest endowment care cemeteries on the West Coast. The property was originally a tulip farm, and black-and-white photographs from that era are displayed in a small on-site museum.
The cemetery is often called the "jewel" of Salem for its extensive landscaping—hundreds of tree varieties, shrubs, and flowers ensure something blooms every month, including strawberry madrones that flower even in winter. Wildlife is abundant throughout the park-like grounds. The gates open daily from 7:30am to dusk.
As a non-denominational cemetery, Belcrest serves all faiths and maintains a strong commitment to veterans. The facility has interred numerous state governors, senators, and other prominent Salem community members over its 90-plus years of operation.
