The renovated three-story facility stands in sharp contrast to its predecessors. The entrance foyer features terrazzo flooring, a water fountain, and a stone botanical flower garden—a particular point of pride for Mrs. Florrie S. Russell, who guided the 1993 renovation. The first level includes two chapels (Mary Rose Russell Chapel to the north and Carl H. Russell, Sr. Chapel to the south), reception area, two offices, area of repose, and handicapped accessible restrooms. The upper level contains a kitchen, office, storage, and living quarters designed to maintain the family atmosphere.
Russell Funeral Home emphasizes personalized service guided by licensed funeral directors who recognize each family's unique requests and traditions.
Russell Funeral Home opened its doors in October 1939 when Carl H. Russell, Sr. launched the business from a modest building at 721 East Seventh Street with minimal equipment purchased from a closing funeral home in Falls Church, Virginia. The operation relocated in 1962 to the corner of Ninth Street and Ridge Avenue, then moved into its current purpose-built facility in 1964. The address has since changed—Ninth Street is now Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Ridge Avenue is now Carl Russell Avenue, named for the founder.
The current three-story facility was dedicated on October 10, 1993, following a major renovation led by Mrs. Florrie S. Russell, who took over leadership after her husband's death in 1987. The building features Tennessee Crab Orchard stone and brick exterior, a terrazzo foyer with water fountain and stone botanical flower garden, two chapels, and living quarters for staff—reflecting the "family serving families" philosophy that has defined the business for over 85 years.
