Hillcrest Cemetery occupies 4.87 acres of land south of downtown Cary, fully surrounded by wooded residential neighborhoods that provide a buffer from surrounding development. The grounds are open to visitors daily with seasonal hours: 8 am to 8 pm from April through August, and 8 am to 6 pm from September through March. A printable map and walking tour materials are available for self-guided exploration of the historic site.
Hillcrest Cemetery stands as Cary's sole municipal cemetery, a 4.87-acre historic landmark located south of downtown at 608 Page Street. The Town of Cary acquired most of the cemetery through several transactions during the 1960s and 1970s, consolidating what had been a community burial ground into public ownership. In 2014, the cemetery received official designation as a Cary historic landmark, recognizing its significance to the town's heritage.
The cemetery holds particular importance as the final resting place for individuals who shaped Cary's development across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Among the more than 2,400 burial sites are fifteen former Cary mayors, leading local educators, and prominent business families including the Jones, Page, Templeton, and Guess families. Notable interments include Cary High School principal Marcus Baxter Dry, educator Esther Ivey, businessman Russell O. Heater, Alfred "Buck" Jones, and R.S. "Dad" Dunham. The cemetery is surrounded on all sides by wooded residential neighborhoods, creating a secluded setting despite its proximity to downtown.
