The original building was constructed in 1952 on land Benton Anthony purchased with WWII savings, representing one of the first funeral chapels in the Brighton area. Anthony Funeral and Cremation operates from 2305 Monroe Avenue in Rochester's Brighton neighborhood, a location founder Benton Anthony gambled on in 1952 when most Brighton services were held downtown. The chapel opened after Anthony, inspired by his uncle in Schenectady, completed mortuary school at Simmons in Syracuse and served in the South Pacific during WWII—using his military savings to purchase the land his father had secured.
The business remains independent and family-operated. Mark and Scott Anthony completed the purchase from their father in 1984, and the third generation—Lauren Anthony Henderson and Mike Anthony—now lead operations. Lauren joined in 2004; Mike returned in 2015 after nine years as a U.S. Forest Service firefighter. The Brighton location underwent a full remodel in 2020 to create what the family describes as "a new experience for families."
