Jackson Funeral Residence traces its origins to 1960, when Herbert Alexander Jackson—a 1948 graduate of American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service—purchased 384 Communipaw Avenue and established Jackson Funeral Residence, Inc. A Lincoln High School graduate who earned his New Jersey funeral director license in 1950, Jackson built the business with his wife Audrey E. Dillard, who later earned her own funeral service degree from the same institute and graduated summa cum laude from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
The original location operated for nearly 60 years until March 14, 2019, when Jackson's daughter Rosalyn A. Browne retired and ceased operations. That same day, longtime employees Sidney M. Hagans and Craig J. Thomas received permission to continue the legacy, establishing Jackson Funeral Residence of Jersey City, LLC. After initially sharing facilities with Plaza Funeral Home at 445 Monmouth Street, the firm opened its current primary location at 1668 John F. Kennedy Boulevard on January 1, 2022 following renovations.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the staff assisted approximately 160 families with COVID-related deaths without turning anyone away.
