The Janazah Project

The Janazah Project operates from 602 Salem Avenue in Elizabeth, New Jersey, as a nonprofit initiative focused on addressing gaps in Muslim funeral support. The organization positions itself not as a commercial funeral service but as a community responsibility—stepping in when families face the dual burden of grief and financial constraint.

The project emerged from recognition that many Muslims experience delayed burials due to cost barriers, struggle to arrange proper Islamic services, and carry emotional and financial weight without adequate support structures. Their approach frames the janazah as a collective obligation (fard kifayah) upon the Muslim community rather than an individual family burden.

Programming centers on three interconnected areas: direct funeral expense assistance for those in need, Sadaqah Jariyah opportunities including water wells, and food relief for families facing hardship.
