J. N. Boufford & Sons traces its origins to 1904, when founder Joseph Nazaire Boufford established what would become one of Manchester's enduring family funeral homes. Born in Quebec in 1866, Boufford had trained in embalming and funeral direction before opening at 110 Bridge Street—a move that helped shift American funeral customs away from home-based services toward dedicated facilities. The operation remains at its original address more than a century later.
The business passed to son Edmond J. Boufford in 1934, who had earned his embalming license in 1932. Third-generation leadership came through Clyde J. Baker, a licensed funeral director from 1967 who managed the home for over 46 years until his death in 2015. Current leadership rests with Edmond B. Baker, great-grandson of the founder, who obtained his funeral director license in 1996. Both Clyde and Edmond Baker maintained membership in the New Hampshire Funeral Directors Association and National Funeral Directors Association.
