Kessler & Maguire Funeral Home traces its origins to May 1915, when John M. Kessler, Helen T. Kessler, and Thomas S. Maguire established the firm. In 1926, they constructed a new facility at 640 West 7th Street—the first building in St. Paul specifically designed and built as a funeral home. The distinctive Old English architectural theme set it apart from converted residences common to the era. The business later passed to John L. Lepak of St. Paul, who in 1998 brought in Tom Vertin, a funeral director from Breckenridge, Minnesota, as a partner. Today, the facility operates under the name Serenity Memorial while maintaining the Kessler & Maguire legacy.
