Hobbs Funeral Home operates from a converted 19th-century Victorian farmhouse at 230 Cottage Road in South Portland, a location the family has called home since November 1941. Founded by Frank Hobbs, Sr. and Elizabeth A. (Betty) Hobbs, the business began with exactly 12 calls its first year—Frank Sr.'s minimum threshold for viability—and has grown into a third-generation family operation.
The original structure, built by the Clemons family as a farmhouse with an attached blacksmith shop, retains its character through preserved milled woodwork and a replaced cupola featuring an antique Howard clock that serves as a local landmark. Between 1990 and 2000, the family completed comprehensive renovations including new windows, roofing, driveways, and interior furnishings while maintaining the building's historic integrity.
Jeffrey Hobbs, who joined the business in 1979 just before his father's passing, now serves as owner and president alongside his nephew Jeffrey Inman, representing the third generation. The family also operates The Elizabeth A. Hobbs Hospitality Centers at the same location and maintains a second facility in Scarborough.
