Pine Grove Crematorium opened in 2007 as a dedicated cremation facility operated by Brookings-Smith, a family-owned funeral home. The building was designed by architect David R. Merritt, AIA, specifically to complement its setting among mature pine trees on the slopes of a field within Pine Grove Cemetery. Unlike repurposed facilities, this structure was built from the ground up as a crematorium with an adjacent Remembrance Center for memorial gatherings.
The facility distinguishes itself through operational rigor rather than scale. Staff developed a proprietary 10-step "Peace-of-Mind Cremation Process" that exceeds Maine's legal requirements, including continuous DVR monitoring, manufacturer-certified equipment operators, and detailed microchip logging of each cremation. Families may tour the crematory during business hours and witness cremations through a dedicated viewing room with direct sightlines to the cremation chamber.
Pine Grove Crematorium maintains active memberships in Cremation Association of North America (CANA Member #105030), National Funeral Directors Association, and Selected Independent Funeral Homes. The facility works with five associated funeral homes across Maine to serve families who select cremation as their disposition choice.
