The Garden Chapel serves as the primary gathering space for final goodbyes—a covered patio with seating and cement flooring designed for easier navigation than traditional graveside services. A 48-niche columbarium sits north of the chapel. The 80-acre grounds encompass 100 sections spanning historic and contemporary areas, with ongoing maintenance supported by volunteer organizations including the Friends of Historic Topeka Cemetery and Sons of Union Veterans.
The cemetery emphasizes pre-need planning with price protection through 2026 and state-supervised trust accounts for vault and opening/closing funds.
Historic Topeka Cemetery holds the distinction of being the oldest chartered cemetery in Kansas, established in 1859 when the city itself was in its infancy. The 80-acre grounds serve as the final resting place for more than 35,000 individuals, including founders of Topeka and Kansas, state capital advocates, university builders, and railroad and manufacturing pioneers who shaped the region's prosperity.
The cemetery operates as a non-profit entity, with all proceeds directed back into grounds care and improvements. For its first century, the Crane family directed operations with board assistance. Today, governance belongs to the Topeka Cemetery Association—collectively, all individuals who own burial spaces. A volunteer board of directors drawn from this membership oversees operations, with lot owners convening annually each February to address concerns.
Funding derives from three sources: space sales, a city of Topeka stipend that helps ensure continued private operation, and interest from a perpetual care fund held in trust at Kaw Valley Bank. This municipal partnership carries significance: state law would require city takeover should the cemetery default.
