Memorial Park Cemetery occupies 50 gently rolling acres at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Gage Boulevard, a location it has held since German immigrant Max Schuchart founded the cemetery in 1926. The property has served as the final resting place for generations of Topeka families across nearly a century of operation.
In 1988, Ren and Theresa Newcomer purchased the cemetery, bringing new stewardship to the historic grounds. Today the cemetery balances its role as a burial ground with its function as a community gathering space—the pond near Sixth and Gage remains the property's most popular feature, where children and families have gathered for generations to feed ducks and geese.
The cemetery maintains an active presence in the community beyond burial services, hosting annual Memorial Day activities, a fall Concert in the Park, and a winter Holiday Remembrance Service.
