Boardman-Smith Funeral Home traces its origins to 1848 as the Hutchinson Undertaking Company, making it the oldest continuously operating funeral home in the Springfield area. The business has occupied its current location at 800 South Grand Avenue West since 1958, following earlier operations at two downtown Springfield addresses. In 2015, Chris Butler acquired the funeral home, integrating it into the Butler Family of Organizations and completing significant interior and exterior renovations to modernize accessibility and technology while preserving its historic character.
The funeral home's legacy includes a documented connection to the Lincoln family spanning multiple generations. Thomas C. Smith, who purchased the business from Hutchinson shortly after the Civil War, personally assisted in the preparation, movement and burial of President Abraham Lincoln in May 1865. Smith was subsequently called upon in December 1865 to relocate Lincoln and his son Willie to a temporary vault during construction of Lincoln's Tomb, and again in September 1871 to place Lincoln's coffin in its permanent marble sarcophagus. The funeral home also provided services for Mary Todd Lincoln in 1882 and handled the disinterment of Abraham Lincoln II in 1913.
In 2019, Boardman-Smith was selected as one of only five funeral homes nationwide to receive an authentic replica of Lincoln's coffin from Batesville Casket Company—a solid walnut reproduction with black broadcloth covering, white satin interior, and silver-colored hardware, built to the original 6-foot-6-inch specifications. The funeral home displays this replica alongside Mary Todd Lincoln's original 1882 funeral arrangement ledger and other historical artifacts.
