Services
Bergin emphasizes pre-planning as a core service, marketing it as a way to remove decision-making burden from families during emotional periods. Their guarantee language suggests a contractual commitment to honor pre-arranged specifications.
Bergin Funeral Home traces its origins to 1873, when Martin Bergin succeeded his brother-in-law Michael Maher's undertaking business on South Main Street. The original enterprise was a hybrid operation—selling stationery, school books, religious items, and periodicals alongside funeral services. Martin Bergin, Sr. died Christmas Eve 1903, leaving the business to his five sons: Thomas, Patrick, John, Martin Jr., and Daniel. The third generation brought Thomas's son Martin and Patrick's sons Stephen and Edward into the fold. Edward's four sons—Patrick, Edward Jr. (Mike), William, and Martin—carried the business forward, establishing a lineage that now spans six generations of continuous family ownership.
Today located at 290 East Main Street in Waterbury, Bergin operates from a single facility that has served the community through 150 years of local history. The business maintains its independence as a family-owned operation, with no corporate ownership or franchise affiliation evident in its structure.
