Brown Colonial Mortuary traces its origins to Harold R. Brown, who returned to Santa Ana after serving in Europe during World War I and working in San Francisco's funeral industry. In 1927, he partnered with Samuel Harrel to establish Harrell & Brown on the southeast corner of 17th and Sycamore streets, operating from a converted residence. The partnership evolved in the mid-1930s when Harrel sold his interest to Emil Wagner, leading to the creation of Brown & Wagner Colonial Mortuary. Recognizing Santa Ana's need for modern funeral facilities, the partners opened their current facility in September 1937—directly across the street from their original location. The business has remained at 204 West 17th Street for nearly nine decades, maintaining continuous operation through multiple generations of Santa Ana families.
